Japanese longbow

Japanese longbow is very distinctive long bamboo and wood laminated bows, known as yumi(弓). Modern yumi can be made of fibreglass or carbon-fibre. Yumi are recurved bows, and have the unusual characteristic of being off-center.

The world standard bow is Composite bow. However, longbow developed in the East-West edges of the Eurasian Continent,Japan and  Wales. There was not the popularity of the crossbow and did not do the development in Japan.

The range and the hit power of the crossbow make farmers war potential and are useful when they fight with a number. Because all the Japanese samurais were masters of the bows, they disliked the crossbow which a blaze cannot shot.

The bow for battles changed to art of archery before long. It is called Kyudo. It is useful to focus by aiming at a target. We are usually troubled by worldly desires. It keeps calmness to concentrate on to aim at a target. We calm down then.

It was equal to it with Zen in particular as a method to keep one’s feelings neutral. It is not inferior to meditation in the effect.

Yumi are recurved bows, and have the unusual characteristic of being off-center. That is, the lower arm of the bow is shorter than the upper arm; this is useful when the bow is used from horseback, so that the archer can turn without the bottom of the bow hitting the horse.
